Raising awareness of the high cost of female hygiene is top of the agenda this International Women’s Day at South Bunbury Marketplace.

The newly opened fresh food marketplace and grocery store will be going where no other supermarket dares when it hands out free tampons next Monday and lowers the price of the products permanently.

International Woman’s Day will be held on the 8th of March 2021 with a goal to celebrate women's achievement, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality.

South Bunbury Marketplace Office Manager, Lauren Harrison, said that the locally owned store had a better understanding of modern issues facing customers in the Bunbury region.

“Sometimes it is important to take a stand on an issue, and by us lowering the cost it can deliver some real lifetime savings to local women”, Ms Harrison said.

“Not only are we handing out freebies next Monday, but we have also gone to our suppliers and asked them for their long-term support so we can give the best value every day.” said Ms Harrison.

“We have calculated that with the price reductions we have made, across a woman’s life it will save them thousands of dollars by shopping at the Marketplace”, Ms Harrison said.

Store Assistant Abbey Baker was thrilled with the announcement and said the move would also see the price of pads, liners and other women’s items decrease.

“Female hygiene can be really expensive, so it’s great that we are going to change that”, Ms Baker said.

“I really hope that other businesses follow suit so that we can make a real difference”, said Ms Baker.

South Bunbury Marketplace opened late last year with a focus on delivering low prices everyday rather than frequent price changes through weekly specials.
